Mission

The Virginia Business Leadership Network provides employers with education and resources, and helps organizations realize the business imperative of including individuals with disabilities in the workforce and marketplace respectively.

Why this is Important to Business- The FACTS

  • Individuals with disabilities are qualified and want to work. As customers they have an annual buying power of $3 trillion and aggregate income of $220 billion
  • Individuals with disabilities are the largest minority population; more than 65 million Americans, 20 million of working age
  • This is a population that anyone can join at any time; only 18% are born with a disability
  • Business has more jobs than people- with an impending labor shortage of 10 million by 2015. ---There is a lack of skilled and qualified workers today in the US
  • Baby boomer retirement creates vacancies to fill; and companies wishing to retain them will see this population encounter disabilities as they age
  • Employers with high turnover will see cost savings through retention of this loyal workforce
  • Returning veterans (disabled and non) expect to reenter the workforce
  • 40-45% of college graduates with disabilities are unemployed
  • Business recognizes the value of diversity and will benefit by expanding diversity to include people with disabilities
  • 88% of Americans prefer to give their business to employers who hire people with disabilities

How It Works

VABLN membership provides training and educational resources to human resources professionals and their managers on topics that enable them to recruit, retain and promote individuals with disabilities. Networking opportunities in a "business to business" environment enables collaborative learning and sharing of best practices, which holistically enhances mutual successes. Moreover business learns how to promote their products and services to the community of individuals with disabilities.

Vision

VABLN members will diversify and improve their workforce, enhance shareholder value and benefit the communities in which they do business.
