Liza Bruce, Educational Credit Management Corporation

Liza Bruce is a native of Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1987. Liza has worked in the Financial Aid industry since 1989. She currently works in the Client Relations department of the Educational Credit Management Corporation in Richmond. Liza lost her sight in 1997. She also had a kidney and pancreas transplant at that time. Since becoming blind, Liza has attended the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired, gotten a Leader Dog named Baxter, returned to work full-time after a three-year illness, and married a wonderful man named David Hines.

Liza volunteers for numerous organizations including the Richmond Host Lions Club, Leader Dogs for the Blind and Lifenet, as well as numerous professional associations in the financial aid industry. Liza currently serves on the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind Volunteer Council, the Board of the Virginia Business Leadership Network and the Board of Virginia Industries for the Blind. She is serving a four-year appointment by the Governor to the Virginia Board for the Blind and Vision Impaired and she was elected as Chair of this Board in April of 2006.

Liza and her faithful friend, Baxter, are a Field Representative team for the Leader Dog School for the Blind. She and Baxter travel to Lions Club conventions across the country to talk about Leader Dogs and the great work that they do.

Liza and Baxter have spoken for college convocations, professional development workshops for university faculty and staff, leadership workshops, financial aid professional association conferences, non-profit events and corporate trainings. Her presentations speak to Diversity, perseverance, motivation, and grabbing the gusto out of life. Through her presentations and by example, Liza makes known the importance of people with disabilities in the workplace for both the person with a disability and the employer. Liza´s goal is to remind people that life is precious, that family, friends and the love of others are paramount, and that every day each of us makes a difference in the lives of others.
