Liza Bruce

Liza Bruce, Educational Credit Management Corporation

Liza Bruce is a native of Richmond, Virginia. She graduated from the University of Virginia in Charlottesville in 1987. Liza has worked in the Financial Aid industry since 1989. She currently works in the Client Relations department of the Educational Credit Management Corporation in Richmond. Liza lost her sight in 1997. She also had a kidney and pancreas transplant at that time. Since becoming blind, Liza has attended the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind and Vision Impaired, gotten a Leader Dog named Baxter in June of 2000, returned to work full-time after a three year illness, married a wonderful man named David Hines, and returned to Leader Dog for her second dog guide, Cooper, in June of 2008.

Liza volunteers for numerous organizations including Lifenet, the Richmond Host Lions Club, Leader Dogs for the Blind and several state and regional Financial Aid professional associations. Liza currently serves on the Virginia Rehabilitation Center for the Blind Volunteer Council, the Board of the Virginia Business Leadership Network and the Board of Virginia Industries for the Blind. Liza is serving her second four-year appointment by the Governor to the Virginia Board for the Blind and Vision Impaired and she has been serving as Chair of this Board since April 2006.

Liza and her faithful friend, Cooper, are a Graduate Field Representative team for the Leader Dog School for the Blind. She and Cooper travel to Lions Club conventions across the country to talk about Leader Dogs and the great work that they do.

Liza has spoken at corporate Diversity programs, college convocations, professional development workshops for university faculty and staff, leadership workshops and financial aid professional association conferences. Her presentations speak to Diversity, perseverance, motivation, and grabbing the gusto out of life. Liza´s goal is to remind people that life is precious, that family, friends and the love of others are paramount, and that every day each of us makes a difference in the lives of others.
